Rationale

"Education is the most powerful weapon which   you can use to change the world". Nelson Mandela

Student Engagement

I noticed during my whole group instruction, that my students were not as engaged as I would have liked. They did not seem excited about math and I had difficulty with students participating in class. I also felt that I was not meeting my students' needs. I was providing little differentiation for my students in my classroom. I was not helping my students to be successful in math and differentiating for their academic level.

Math Topic Tests

My students were also struggling to connect the strategies I was teaching in daily math instruction to their math topic tests, resulting in a low class average of 83.3%. Also, there were only three students in the whole first grade that qualified for title in math and all three were in my class.

AIMSWeb Assessment

The AIMSWeb assessment is a universal screening, progress monitoring, and data management system that supports Response to Intervention (RTI) and tiered instruction. We use this assessment for interventions, grouping for guided reading and math, and it is also a way to monitor students' progress weekly.

The Fall benchmark for the AIMSWeb One-Digit Math Fact Fluency Assessment was a score of 12. Students had one minute to complete as many single addition and subtraction problems in this format: 3+5, 5-3. The data showed me that 19 out of 22 students did not meet the benchmark in the One-Digit Math Fact Fluency.

Baseline Data

The goal at the end of the year is to have all students meet the benchmark score of 16 on the AIMSweb One-Digit Math Fact Fluency. The jump from 12 to 16 is not a significant difference, however, only three students met the benchmark score of 12 at the beginning of the year. My students were all across the board on this assessment, however, all students had an area of growth. The baseline data showed that my students needed to improve or extend on their math facts and number sense.

Data provided in this chart is the Fall AIMSweb scores from the 22 First Grade students who participated in this study. Students must score a 16 on the Spring test to be considered established.
